Ald. Harold Paikin To Leave Waterloo

Ald. Harold Paikin, Waterloo's first two-year-term mayor, will be leaving Waterloo some time next month.

Head of bottling operations at Joseph E. Seagram and Sons, Ltd., Waterloo, he is being transferred to Montreal where he will act in the same capacity at the larger Seagram distillery there.

Ald. Paikin, who headed the aldermanic polls in the last civic election in 1959, said he will "most regretfully" tender his resignation as alderman "some time before the end of March."

He has been an alderman for six years.

The council vacancy may be filled by Vernon Bauman, former mayor and former alderman, who placed ninth in the 1959 aldermanic race.

      HAMILTON NATIVE

Ald. Paikin, who heads Waterloo Council's works committee, was elected the city's first two-year-term mavor in a four- man race in December, 1957. He was alderman for five years previous to his election as mayor and this year started his seventh term in that capacity.

A Hamilton native, he has been a resident of Waterloo for the past 16 years. He was emploved at the Montreal Seagram plant before coming to Waterloo.

In addition, he is past chairman of the Twin City Brotherhood Week? and past chairman of the ???? in Waterloo

Ald. Paikin said he will always value and treasure the experiences, associations and friendships made during his stay in Waterloo.

"I can truthfully say of the associations made in Waterloo and Kitchener that Mrs. Paikin and myself and our family truly feel as if we had cast bread upon the waters and it came back cake," he said.

      LOSS REGRETTED

Mayor Bauer, on hearing of Ald. Paikin's transfer, said, "we regret with all sincerity the loss of his counsel and guidance in our deliberations but we rejoice with him on his promotion and progress in his occupation.

"Ald. Paikin is held in high esteem by people in the Twin City area and particularly Waterloo, which was demonstrated by his triumphant two-year term as mayor and his outstanding lead in the aldermanic race in the last election.

"Harold has become a personal friend of mine and I shall personally miss his advice."
