    • Dr. [J. H.] Ratz is a native of Elmira, second youngest son of the late John Ratz, first reeve of the village. After leaving the public schools here, he attended Toronto University and received a degree of B. A. in 1892. He is a Graduate of both the Toronto and Trinity Medical Colleges. After receiving his diplomas he located in New Dundee, in the year 1895, where he enjoyed an extensive practice which he disposed of in 1901. Then he took a post graduate course at the New York Polyclinic, where he paid special attention to studies relating to the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat. On his return from New York, he located at Elmira, and is now enjoying a very successful and extensive practice.

      John Henry Ratz 7 Sep 1869-Feb. 11,1918 Major, Canadian Army Medical Corps

      Son of the late John Ratz; b. Elmira; ed. Elmira, p. s., Galt C. I.: University College 1888-1892, B. A.; Medicine 1892-95, M. D., C. M. Trinity; Practising at New Dundee, Elmira, Bonner's Ferry, Idaho and Preston; 29th Regt. Major; md. Carrie Ruth Bechtel.

      He was appointed to the C. A. M. C. in January 1915 and went overseas as Medical Officer to the 34th Battalion in October. After service at Shorncliffe and West Sandling, and with the Pensions Board at Bath, he returned to Canada in September 1916 and was appointed Assistant Medical Adviser to the Pensions Board at Ottawa. He died at Ottawa after a long illness on Ferbruary 11th, 1918, and was buried at Elmira.

      MAJOR J. H. RATZ, C.A.M.C.

      MAJOR RATZ, whose death occurred at Ottawa on February 11th, was assistant medical advisor to the Pensions Board; he was in the forty-ninth year of his age and had been ill for about six months. Major Ratz was born at Elmira, Ontario, in 1869. After attending the Galt High School he entered the University of Toronto, where he received the degree of B.A. in 1892, and his medical degree three years later. He practised in New Dundee, Elmira, and Trenton, and in January, 1915, gave up his practice to join the Canadian Army Medical Corps. He was appointed medical officer of the 34th Infantry Battalion with which he served for a year. He was then appointed to duty at Shorncliffe and West Sandling, and subsequently served on the Canadian Pension Board at Bath, England. On his return to Canada he was attached to the Pension Board at Ottawa as assistant medical advisor.

      The late Dr. J. H. Ratz was a native of Elmira, the second youngest son of Mr. John Ratz, first Reeve of the Village. After receiving his diploma, he located in New Dundee, in the year 1895, where he enjoyed an extensive practice, which he disposed of in 1901. Then he took a post-graduate course at the New York Polyclinic where he paid special attention to studies relating to diseases of the eye, ear, nose and throat. On his return from New York, he located in Elmira, where he enjoyed an extensive and successful practice.

      He was known as a genial, whole-souled, liberal gentleman, always ready to help his fellow men and will long be remembered by the many friends and patients who survive him.
