RATZ, JOHN H., the second son of the first reeve of Elmira, John Ratz, was born in that village in 1869. After attending the local schools and the Galt High School, he entered the University of Toronto. He received his degree in Arts in 1892, and his medical degree from the University of Toronto and Trinity University in 1895.
In that year he began to practice in New Dundee, and the Waterloo County Chronicle of June 20 commented.
Dr. A. H. Miller has engaged the services of Dr. H. Ratz of Elmira as assistant until October 1st. On that date Dr. Miller will retire and Dr. Ratz will assume his practice. Dr. Ratz comes with valuable credentials. He is a graduate in both arts and medicine, and is also a graduate of Trinity University. He is specially competent to treat all diseases of the eye and ear, having practised with Dr. Noecker of Waterloo for three years. We welcome the young man to our midst and hope he may gain the same confidence of the community his predecessors undoubtedly held.
In 1900 he disposed of his practice and took a two month course in Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat diseases at the Polyclinic Hospital in New York. Early in 1901 he returned and settled in Elmira.
On October 27, 1909 the Daily Telegraph reported in the Elmira News:
Dr. Ratz has sold his practice here to Dr. Faulds of Toronto. He has an engagement for the winter with Dr. Fry at Bonner's Derry, Idaho, and will look out for a location in the West.
He did move to the west where his cousin Dr. n. E. Fry had founded a hospital, and although the University of Toronto Monthly of December, 1909, said that he was in Spokane, Wash., there is a gap in his chronological account, the Daily Telegraph of July 11, 1912 resumed the account:
Dr. and Mrs. J. H. Katz who have been spending some time with Waterloo friends have gone to Preston where the former will enter upon the practice of his profession. - Dr. Ratz's many friends will be glad to learn that he has recovered from his recent illness.
This move was duly noted by the University of Toronto monthly in January 1915, but by that time he was off again, this time to the army, he had been an active member of the 29th. Regiment of this county, and now joined the C. A. M. C. as Medical Officer for the 34th. Battalion. After this battalion was broken up he was posted to Shorncliffe and West Sandling, and later to the Canadian Pensions Board at Bath. He returned to Canada where he became assistant medical advisor to the Pension Board, Ottawa.
After an illness of some six months, he died in Ottawa in his 49th. year. He was survived by his widow and two daughters.
