HouseofIndustryandRefugeca1869.JPG The House of Industry and Refuge. In 1868, 141 acres was purchased on Frederick Street in Berlin (now Kitchener) and the house opened on June 15, 1869. The original building housed 100 and operated as an industrial farm, which raised crops and livestock. The residents worked for their keep if possible, those most did not. The House eventually became a strictly a residence of the aged and later relocated and renamed Sunnyside. |

Notes |
- Another old pioneer, died at the House of Refuge, Berlin, on Monday, in the person of Mr. Edward Bain and his remains were buried in the Elmira cemetery on Tuesday forenoon. Deceased was one of the first settlers of this district, and one time owned a farm northeast of the village. This he sold and then lived for many years in the village, where everybody knew genial old Ed Bayne. He was never married, and when the infirmities of old age began to make themselves felt, as he had no relatives here, he went to the House of Refuge, where he was well cared for till his days here below were ended.
