    • Death of Emile V. Hoelsche

      "Until the day break, and the shadows flee away."

      Entered into the rest of Paradise, at Atlanta, Ga., on October 12th, 1895, Rev. Emile Victor Hoelsche, son of the late Rev. Jacob Hoeische of Waterloo, Ontario, aged 41 years and 15 days. Interment at Atlanta.

      Out of shadow into sunlight,
      Out of Winter's frost and chill,
      Into Summer light and glory,
      Into rest serene and still;
      From the care and grief and heart-break,
      From the cruel growing old.
      From the desert and the mountains,
      To the shepherd's sheltering fold;
      From the weary ways we're treading,
      To the radiant streets of gold.

      The many friends of Mr. Hoelsche in this town will regret to hear of his premature death. As a young man Mr. Hoelsche gave evidence of being possessed of brilliant parts. His early education was intrusted to the late Dr. Funcken of Berlin, who took a great interest in his promising pupil. He was master of four or five languages, and spoke each with equal facility. He was a very clever musician, and excelled as a piano player. At an early age composed several operettas, one or more of which were rendered in this town, and at a number of the surrounding towns by local talent with Mr. Hoelsche as director. He left Waterloo some ten or twelve years ago.

      Rev. Emile V, Hoelsche, brother to H. J. Hoelsche of Brookville. died at Atlanta, Georgia, on Oct. 12, ultimo. We copy the following obituary notice from the Glen Gardner Avalanche: Mr. Hoelsche was born at Waterloo, Canada in 1855, and was the son of Jacob and Frances Hoelsche. He was educated in St. Jerome College, Berlin Canada, licensed by the Lutheran Synod of East Ohio in 1888, and ordained a minister by the N. Y. and N. J. Synod of the Lutheran Church in 1889. In Feb., 1891 be became pastor of the Clarkesville Lutheran Church, and continued such until Nov. 1893 when he resigned, owing to poor health.

      In 1894 he entered the Elizabeth Presbytery, but was unable to take a charge on account of ill health. He went south for the benefit of his health, and was for some time in St. Augustine Fla., where he was organist in one of the first churches.

      Mr. Hoelsche had many warm friends here. His work in the Clarkesville Lutheran Church will stand as a living monument of his integrity and indomitable ambition in spite of ill health. He was a fine scholar, an accomplished musician, a fluent speaker, and withall a gentleman. Peace to his ashes.
