____________________________
George Vogt, a respected inhabitant of Elmira, died there on Friday morning at the age of 82 years and 27 days. He was born in Oberkirch, Grand Duchy of Baden, and came to Canada approximately 60 years ago where he followed the organ-building trade with long-dead Mr. Hager in Preston, and later on in Hamilton; then, he had a furniture factory in Plattsville with Mr. Michael Gilles. For several years, he had a restaurant in Elmira and also built organs; recently however, he lived in retirement. He is survived by his widow and eight children, among them, the well-known organist, A.S. Vogt, in Toronto.

Several weeks ago the readers of The Signet were apprised of the approaching death of one of the oldest citizens of Elmira, Mr. George Vogt, whose constitution has been for some time gradually giving way to the ravages of old age and its attending infirmities. Death released him of his sufferings last Thursday, evening at 8 o'clock, closing the earthly career of a widely known, intelligent and highly respected resident, whose name was familiar to all for miles around. Deceased was born in Oberkirch, Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany, where he passed his youth and early manhood, and acquired the trade of pipe organ builder. In 1842 he emigrated to Canada, locating in Preston, Ont., where he was married to Mary Ann Zingg, his surviving widow. Their union was blessed with a respectable family of children, eight of whom have lived to reach their majority and to pay their devoted attention at the last illness of their father and to attend his funeral, last Sunday. They are: Mrs. Ph. Christmann, of Elmira: Mr. Fred A. Vogt, of Michawaka, Ind.; Mr. A. S. Vogt, Toronto; Mrs. S. H. Eby, St. Thomas; Mrs. Geo. H. Ruppel. Elmira: Mr. O. H. Vogt, Galt, and the Misses Bella and Minnie Vogt, living at the old home with their mother.
Several years after his arrival at Preston, from Germany, the deceased commenced to build pipe organs in that town. The quality of his work attracted attention, and in 1850 he became partner in the firm of Vogt & Hagen, at Hamilton, builders of pipe organs. This firm did a large business, their organs being universally considered the best that were then made in Canada. After severing his connection with this firm he removed Blenheim, and subsequently to Elmira. His advent to Elmira dates back to the year 1864-38 years ago Though engaged in other business, his native late for mechanical work induced him to enter upon the task of building church organs, which he did in a well equipped shop in the rear of his place of business, preferring, when ever possible, to do all the work himself, paying the most accurate attention to the smallest details of his instruments. It was owing to thorough understanding of his trade and his careful, thorough workmanship that his instruments possessed admirable qualities of tone and were exceedingly durable, Organ builders of the present day who occasionally repair or utilize the material of the pipe organs of the firm of Vogt & Hagen speak in the highest terms of the superiority of the work done by the deceased. One of the instruments made by Mr. Vogt, while in Elmira, is in St. James Lutheran church, while a number of others are in use in churches of neighboring villages and towns. During the last eleven years the deceased lived in retirement. He was passionately fond of reading and the culture of flowers, and passed the last years of his life in quiet, inoffensive attention to the surroundings of his home. During the last winter he was seldom able to be out and when spring unfurled the leaves and buds of his favorite flowers, his enervated hands were no more able to attend to them and his wandering mind no more able to realize or appreciate their beauty, The deceased had reached the age of 82 years, and 27 days.
The funeral, which was one of the largest held in Elmira, took place on Sunday afternoon, was attended by friends from Waterloo, Berlin, Galt and other places.
