  Former Waterloo Mayor Arthur Paleczny has died The 91-year-old died due to COVID-19, according to his family Former Mayor of the City of Waterloo Arthur Paleczny has died at the age of 91 due to COVID-19, according to his family. An obituary written by his family confirms that the former mayor passed away on Monday due to the virus, "while under the loving care of the support team at 'The Highview Residence' in Kitchener." "We just had the chance to celebrate his 91st birthday together on Friday. We are grieving right along with the family," said Highview Residences Chief Operating Officer Joy Birch in a statement. Sadly, his family was unable to be with him in his last days of life because of the pandemic. Paleczny was the mayor during Canada's centennial year of 1967, and served on City Council for eight years, and oversaw the construction of a new band shell, the University of Waterloo's tenth anniversary and more. "On behalf of my council colleagues and the residents of the city, I offer my condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Paleczny," said Waterloo Mayor Dave Jaworsky in a statement. "Mr. Paleczny served on council during an exciting and transformative decade for our city and he led the city to some legacy decisions and projects that still benefit the city today."
