Notes |
- Mrs. P. Christman Dies In 88th Year
Succumbs After Week's Illness; Had Enjoyed Good Health; And Was Elmira's Second Oldest Lady
Death took Elmira's second oldest lady citizens, Mrs. Philip Christman. highly respected resident of the vicinity for over 70 years, at her late home on Arthur street. The late Mrs. Christman was in her 88th year, enjoying fairly good health up until one week ago, when she became Ill.
Mrs. Christman was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Vogt. She was born in Hamilton but spent her early years in Washington, near Galt, before coming to the Elmira district at the age of 16 with her parents. Seventy years ago she was married to Philip Christman. who predeceased her nine years ago.
A member of the Presbryterian church, the late Mrs. Christman was looked upon as one of the church's most faithful followers, very seldom missing a Sunday service until a short period before her death. It become an annual event for the Presbyterian Ladies' Aid members to celebrate Mrs. Christman's birthday with her. It was in these happy surroundings that she celebrated her 87th birthday on March 25. At that time she was pleasantly able to take an active part in the party proceedings. The entire congregational members now mourn her passing. Some years ago she was made a life member of the Women's Missionary Society.
The Elmira Horticultural Society lists Mrs. Christman's name among the organization's founders. She took an appreciative interest in horticultural work and was known as a true lover of flowers and nature.
Two daughters, Mrs. J. A. Harper of Waterloo, and Miss Bertha, at home, and three sons, Charles of Windsor; Otto of Orillia and George home, survive. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. S. H. Eby of St. Thomas and Mrs. C. K. Jansen of Galt.
The funeral, which was well attended, was held at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon from her late home to the Presbyterian church for service. Rev. G. D. Little officiated and interment was made in the Elmira Cemetery. The Pall bearers were Messrs. Geo. Reuter, W. Moser, A. W. Devitt, D. S. Erb, J. Mahood and A. Zeigler

MRS. P. CHRISTMAN CELEBRATES HER EIGHT-SEVENTH BIRTHDAY
Probably Elmira's second oldest resident, Mrs. Philip Christman celebrated her 87th birthday at her home on Arthur street on Wednesday. Still in excellent health, and active, Mrs. Christman was entertained at home by some thirty-five ladies of the Presbyterian church on Wednesday night.
Able to take an active part in the birthday party proceedings, Mrs. Christman was indeed the centre of attention. She was delightfully surprised with the presentation of a floor rug from the ladies present, While the games and contests held added to the pleasure of her four scores and seventh birthday.
A member of the Presbyterian church, Mrs. Christman is looked upon as one of the most faithful followers, very seldom missing a. Sunday service. The ladies of the church who entertained her have done so annually since she passed the eighty mark. Many more such gatherings are looked forward to by all.
Born in Hamilton, Mrs. Christman moved to this district approximately 72 years ago. Two younger sisters are still living, Mrs. C. Jensen of Galt, and Mrs. S. H. Eby of St. Thomas. It is believed that Mrs. Mary Schroeder, 92 years of age, is the only lady older than Mrs. Christman in Elmira. .
Wednesday night's birthday cake was decorated with four candles, but on the top centre was the number 87 clearly made in colored icing. The presentation of the floor rug was made Rev. G.D. Little, on behalf of the ladies.
