Notes |
- James Hall.
Here is one of the many successful business men of which Waterloo County can boast men who, through pluck, perseverance and economical traits, have surmounted all discouraging obstacles incident to the pathway of a bumble beginning. Mr. Hall was born in the County of Yorkshire, England, May 4, 1833. He came to this country in 1856, landing at Quebec after a voyage of eight weeks and three days, in one of the slow sailing craft of that day. From Quebec he came up the St. Lawrence River, through the famous Thousand Islands, the mode of conveyance being a primitive tug boat drawn by horses. He finally reached Hamilton, and from there came to Hawksville. Here he launched out in the boot and shoemaking trade. In this business he soon acquired a very large patronage, owing to a well-earned reputation for doing honest work. For a number of years be employed from five to six shoemakers, but the gradual advancement of boot and shoe manufacturing industries, with which hand labor could not compete in price, rendered the village shoe-shop an unprofitable institution, and the subject of this sketch entered into the mercantile business. He opened his present general store in 1876, which he continues to this day, and in which he has also had splendid success, having enjoyed a large patronage from the start. As to the extent of his stock and quality it will compare favorably with any village store in the county, and his prices will be found as reasonable.
In 1896 [sic 1859] Mr. Hall returned to England on an important errand. It was to form a matrimonial alliance with Miss Catharine Bucklering [sic Puckering], also native of Yorkshire County, where she was born in 1837. After their marriage they returned to the New World to commence house keeping. They now live in a snug little home directly opposite to their store, on Geddes street. It is a delightful shop for a residence. From the rear a commanding view can be had of the Conestogo River bottoms, and the smiling hills in the distance. It is also made particularly attractive by a dense display of shrubbery, ornamental shade trees and fruit trees. This season there were sixty-two plum trees in full bloom on the premises. Mr. and Mrs. Hall are both members of the Presbyterian church. Mr. Hall was at one time at director and President of the Wellesley Township Agricultural Society, but since its removal to Wellesley village he has not been connected with the organization. He has been frequently urged to run for some political office, but be invariably refused as his aspirations were not in that direction. When he arrived in this county on his first voyage, he was made to believe that civilization was yet at a rather low ebb. His first experience in seeing rough citizenship to any serious extent was at Heidelberg, when a blacksmith, furious with rage, was patrolling the streets with a musket, anxious to spill the gore of another citizen with whom he had had some dispute a short time previous. To-day, Mr. Hall thinks there is no county superior to this, both as to morality and good citizenship.

Aged Resident Passes Away.
On Sunday morning Mr. James Hall, one of our oldest residents passed quietly away. He was in his 85th year and has lived in Hawkesville 60 or more years. He was born in England and coming here as a poor boy. making his living by shoemaking. gradually worked his way up till he owned his own shop and later bought the store where he did business almost to the last, upright and honorably. He has been an elder of the Presbyterian church for many years and was always interested in the welfare of the church and manse. Services were held in the house Monday evening and on Tuesday morning the remains were taken to St. Jacobs. thence to Caledon, where interment took place. He is survived by a widow who has the sympathy of all.
