Couple celebrates 50th anniversary ATWOOD --
Mr. and Mrs. Alex Cockwell celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Friday evening with Open House in the Elma Memorial Community Centre, Atwood. The bride of 50 years ago, Lottie Gowing, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Gowing, was born in Elmira and came with her parents to Milverton when she was four years old. Mr. Cockwell was born on the 16th concession, Elma Township and moved with his parents in 1902 to Donegal. Kelly and Kim Cockwell, granddaughters of Mr. and Mrs. Cockwell were at the door and were in charge of the register. Assisting the bride and groom of 50 years ago in receiving the guests were their son Jim and daughter-in-law, Connie Cockwell, their daughter, Helen and son-in-law, Norman Gallop. Dancing to the music of the Footnotes, Staffa, was enjoyed during the evening and lunch was served. Mr. and Mrs. Cockwell were married on January 11, 1929 at the United Church parsonage, Milverton by the late Rev. F.J. Fydell. Following their marriage they took up farming on the Donegal sideroad, Elma Township, where they resided until 1962 when they moved to Atwood. They are members of the Atwood United Church and the Atwood Senior Citizens Club. Mrs. Cockwell is a member of the afternoon unit of the UCW of Atwood United Church and a member of the Maple Leaf Women's Institute. Her hobbies are tatting and baking. Music has also played a big part in Mrs. Cockwell's life. At one time she was organist in the Milverton United Church, Milverton Evangelical Church and at Donegal United Church for about eight years. Mr. Cockwell is a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters, Atwood and Atwood Loyal Orange Lodge, a former member of Donegal United Church and an elder in the church. He enjoys being with the men at the Atwood Men's Euchre Club. The couple has one son Jim of Carsdale, N.Y. and one daughter (Helen) Mrs. Norman Gallop of Brussels and two granddaughters Kelly and Kim Cockwell of Carlsdale, N.Y. Mrs. Cockwell has one brother, Wilfrid Gowing, of Mount Royal, Quebec, who was unable to be present at the celebration. Mr. Cockwell is the only remaining member of his family. The Cockwells were the recipients of many lovely gifts, cards, telephone messages and personal calls of congratulations.
