- DEATH OF CASPER MOGK REMOVES NOTED FIGURE FROM TOWN'S LIFE
85-Year-Old Resident Succumbs in Hospital to Accident Suffered Few Days Ago; Spent Two-Score Years in Town and Originally Owned Ontario House; A Noted Vocalist
The death of Casper Mogk in the Kitchener and Waterloo hospital on Wednesday afternoon, May 12, closed the life of one who had been closely in touch with the development of Elmira for the last 40 years. Born at Echziel, Grosz Herzogthum, Hesson on April 18, 1841, the late Mr. Mogk emigrated to this country at 18 years of age. For two years he followed the trade of shoemaker in New York, after which he went to Waterloo. There he married Charlotte Henzel, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Henzel. At that time he came to Elmira, and spent a short period here as a shoemaker, later returning to Waterloo. In 1889 he purchased the Ontario House where he has lived ever since.
On April 18, Mr. Mogk was 85 years of age and a number of his old friends gathered at the Ontario House to celebrate the occasion with him.
In spite of his age, he has enjoyed fairly good health, and his sudden death was the result of an unfortunate accident which occurred a few days ago. While coming out of Werner's Drug store he slipped and fell, fracturing his arm. He was immediately removed to the Kitchener and Waterloo hospital where he passed away on Wednesday.
The late Mr. Mogk was a member of the Masonic Order and also held the 50 year jewel of the Odd Fellows. In his younger days he was solo bass of the Liedertaufel and Harmonic Singing Clubs, and was actively interested in all sports.
His wife predeceased him 26 years ago. There were eight children, two of whom died in infancy, and William who died 19 years ago. The survivors are Mary (Mrs. H. J. Gibson) of Elmira, Henry B. Mogk of Detroit; Ida (Mrs. A. Winger) of Elmira, Elizabeth (Mrs. F. W. Eitel) of Orillia, and Emil O. Mogk of Detroit.
The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon with service at the house at 52 Arthur street at 2 p.m. and later at St. James's Lutheran Church. Interment will be made in the Union Cemetery.

______________
DEATH SUMMONED VETERAN HOTELMAN
Interesting And Busy Career Ended By Death Of Casper Mogk; Was A Talented Singer In Younger Days
The death of Casper Mogk, on Wednesday afternoon removed from our midst one of the best known business men of Elmira, and a veteran hotelman.
The late Mr. Mogk was born at Echziel, Grosz Herzogthum, Hesson, Germany April 1841, and came to this country at the age of 18 years. He landed in New York and for two years followed the shoemaker trade. From there he came to Waterloo. He married Charlotte Henzel, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Henzel. They moved to Elmira and Mr. Mogk followed his trade as shoemaker. In 1889 he purchased the Ontario House where he lived until his death. On April 18 he celebrated his 85th birthday.
He enjoyed fairly good health, though his sight began to be impaired somewhat, and perhaps it was this that caused his untimely death. A few days ago while coming out of Werner's drugstore, he slipped and in falling fractured his arm. He was removed, to the K. & W. Hospital, but the shock was too severe he died a few days later.
He was a member of the Masonic Order and held the 50 year jewel of the Oddfellows.
In his younger days he was a member of the Liedertafel and Harmonic singing clubs, being a bass soloist.
Mrs. Mogk predeceased him 26 years ago.
Those who survive are: Mary (Mrs. H. J. Gibson). Elmira: Henry B. Monk of Detroit; Elizabeth. (Mrs. F. W. Eitel). Orillia; and Emil O. Mogk. Detroit.
The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon with service, at the house. Arthur street, and at St. James' Lutheran Church, thence to the Elmira cemetery. Rev. Mr. Kalbfleisch will conduct the service.
