- EDMUND SCHLEGEL
Edmund Schlegel, a native of Williamsburg,Waterloo county. died August 6 at Los Angeles, Cal.. at the age of 81 years. The deceased learned the printing trade in the office of the Berlin Telegraph when it was owned by John McDougall and edited by Alexander Macpherson. In 1878 he left for the west and worked for many years as compositor on the San Francisco Chronicle. He leaves a widow, a former Miss Shuch of Hamilton and niece of the late Mrs. George Klein of Kitchener.

Final Services Conducted For SW Pioneer
Last rites for Edmund L. Schlegel, pioneer California printer and Los Angeles resident, who died at his home, 1807 West Forty-sixth street, were held at Grace chapel, Inglewood Park cemetery. Pierce Brothers mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.
Schlegel, 79 years of age, came to California in 1880 and had lived for the past 28 years in Los Angeles. He first started on The San Francisco Chronicle and was transferred in 1911 to The Los Angeles Tribune, later to The Los Angeles Express, having, been foreman in the composing rooms of these two papers.
He held several high offices in the typographical union. Also, he was the first to build a residence in the old College tract in the Southwest district. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Minnie A. Schlegel, a son, Palmer Schlegel, and two daughters, Mrs. Georgia Richards and Mrs. Letitia Surdez.
