Funeral will be held Saturday for Wojciech Plaga, 40

KITCHENER - The man killed after being struck by a vehicle on Highland Road West this week is being remembered by his family as "a kind, loving and warm-hearted man."

"Today my parents are burying their only son," said his sister, Aneta Plaga, in a statement on Friday.

"He was not alone. He was not invisible. He was a son, brother, uncle, and friend," she said.

"He will be dearly missed. And he will be remembered in our hearts forever."

Just before 11 a.m. on Monday, police were called to Highland Road and Westforest Trail for a report of an injured man. When police arrived, they found 40-year-old Wojciech Plaga dead by the side of the road.

Police say they believe he was walking during the overnight hours from Sunday to Monday when he was struck by a vehicle. The driver left the scene.

There are no sidewalks or street lights on the stretch of Highland Road where the body was found.

Family did not say why Wojciech was in the area, but his parents live nearby and he did visit them frequently.

"For the person who caused the fatal accident that killed my brother, Wojciech, please contact the Waterloo Police services and take accountability for your actions," said Aneta, adding that anyone who knows the driver is also urged to come forward.

Wojciech was of Polish descent. His funeral service is being held Saturday at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Kitchener.

Anyone with dash cam footage of Highland Road between Ira Needles and Eastforest Trail on Feb. 2, between 10:30 and 11 p.m., or on Feb. 3, between 6 and 10:30 a.m., is asked to contact police at 519-570-9777, ext. 8191. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Police said the times are when they believe the man was struck, and when potential witnesses may have been in the area.
