Notes |
- POSTMASTER RUPPEL, DEAD
Last Saturday death claimed the oldest citizen of Elmira in the person of Mr. John Ruppel, Postmaster, who up to about a year since was actively engaged in his work although he had, at the time of his death reached the age of 83 years and 17 days. He was a native of Hessen, Germany and came to Elmira from that country in 1852 when 25 years of age.
Here he spent the remainder of his life. During his early manhood he was engaged in the manufacture of potash, later in making brick just west of Elmira on the farm now owned by Mr. Philip Beisel. He manufactured the brick of which St. Pauls Lutheran parsonage, the residences of Mr. Conrad Hahn that of Mrs. Koerber and the Ontario House were built. Soon he engaged as clerk in Mr. Isaac Wenger's Store and became a partner in the business. Later this partnership was dissolved and each of the partners continued business on his own account. Mr. Wenger in the store now occupied by the Otto Estate and Mr. Ruppel in a frame building where now stand the stores of Messrs A. Werner and Jury & Amy. Here he conducted an extensive trade for many years and later removed to Dunke's block where he ended his mercantile career. After the death of Mr. Peter Winger he was appointed Post Master and held the office up to the time of his demise although the infirmities of old age during the last year asserted themselves so strongly that he was unable to give the business his personal attention. During his 60 years' residence here he made many friends. Being of a cheerful native and an obliging disposition he was very popular. He was generous to a fault. Several terms he was a representative in the Woolwich Township Council. He also held other honorary positions. He was one of the original members of St. Pauls Lutheran Congregation which was organized in 1860, and of which he has been a consistent member since. He was married to Maria Huehn, of Heidelberg who survives him. His union was blessed with 11 children, 3 of whom have departed this life. The remaining ones are: Mr. J. H., Elmira Village Clerk, Mrs. (Rev. Borth), of Staten Island, N. Y., Henry of Tavistock, George of Elmira, Charles of Buffalo, N.Y., Otto, of Hamilton, Oscar and Mrs. J. S. Weichel, of Elmira.
Sixty years of residence in the same village, closely connected with the growth of the place and in the years of his prime always identified with the every forward movement; he had made for himself a place in the community which only such privileges would admit one to occupy. He was one of the land marks of the community and will be missed, not only by hi family but also by many others who have been accustomed to associate him with the history of the Village.
He leaves a widow, 8 children, 32 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. The funeral took place on Tuesday and was attended by a large number of friends who had come from far and near to pay their last tribute to his memory.

JOHN RUPPEL, P M.
In the person of the above named gentleman we have a good representative of that type of men who came over from the Fatherland, and from a humble beginning became citizens of honorable and prominent character, in Canada and especially in Waterloo county. He was born in Eifa, Hesse- Darmstadt, Germany, Nov. 27th 1827, being now in the seventy-first year of his age. He emigrated from his native land to Canada and arrived at Berlin on June 22, 1852, where he found employment in Messrs. Schneider & Schafer's brickyard. Here he worked for several summers, and in the winter time when the brickyard was closed he worked for the farmers in the vicinity, receiving at the rate of five dollars per month for services. On Sept. 7th, 1853, he came to Elmira and secured employment in the old potash factory then operated by Werger & Weaver. While engaged in this capacity he won the confidence of his employers and he was finally promoted to the position of clerk in their general store, a position he held forteen years. In 1862 we find him a partner of Mr. Isaac Wenger in the general mercantile business in the place at present occupied by Henry Dunke & Co. This partnership existed four years when Mr. Ruppel withdrew from the firm and opened out a stock of general merchandise in an old frame building that stood upon the site of the fine brick block that at present contains the post-office, Werner's drug store and his brother Charles's furniture store. He owned and conducted this business until 1886, when he retired from active mercantile life. On Sept. 11 th, 1889, he was appointed Postmaster here, of which office he is still the incumbent, and it can here be truthfully said that no more efficient or accommodating official in this capacity has ever been appointed in the town. Mr. Ruppel was for many years an auctioneer and his services were always in demand in a radius of many miles. He sold the town lots when Isaac Wenger and Joel Good divided up the old Jonas Wenger farm, and made it part of the village. The proceeds of that sale were $8,000. Mr. Ruppel was Deputy-Reeve of the Township of Woolwich one term, and was for three years a member of the village council. He has since declined to run for any municipal office. In 1856 he was married to Miss Maria, daughter of George Huehn, formerly of Wellesley. Eleven children have been born to them. They are as follows: John H, now clerk of the village; Henry, Margaret, Mary Ann, George, Charles, Louis, Willian and Ida. All are living except Louis and William. The former died from small pox in 1872. Those living are all married and prospering. Mr Ruppel has been a life long Conservative, but is liberal in his views and not so selfish minded as to be entirely bind to everything good that the opposite party may accomplish. His long and splendid record as Postmaster is a sufficient guarantee that he will continue to retain his office under the present Administration. He is a member of the Lutheran church and is a public spirited citizen, being always ready to extend liberal aid to anything that he believes will prove beneficial to the village.
