HISTORY OF GRAND RIVER LODGE No. 151, G.R.C. 1861-1961
...In 1866 Charles Hendry of Conestoga who had occupied both the Junior and Senior Warden's chairs, became the Worshipful Master. He also carried on as Master in 1867. He was followed by his Senior Warden, W. Washburn, in 186S, but he again was called back to preside as Master for an additional three year term, during 1869, 1870 and 1871. A special tribute must be paid to W. Bro. Hendry who carried the responsibilities of Master for no less than five years. He was also the first member to serve Wellington as District Deputy Grand Master...

Charles Hendry, a respected citizen of Waterloo and generally well-known as a business-man and official, died on Monday afternoon in the Berlin-Waterloo Hospital. He had been seriously ill for about 8 days, and when his condition became significantly worse on Monday evening, he was transported to the hospital. The deceased was born in Scotland and emigrated to Canada in his youth. His parents died early and he was raised by Mr Henry Schneider, father of Mayor Schneider of Waterloo. He was the founder of "Blockstaedel" (Log-cabin Town), now Conestogo, where for many years he owned a store; he was a township and county Councillor, Reeve and Warden, president of the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Company and the Reform Association of North Waterloo and lived to the age of 73 years.

THE WOOLWICH COUNCIL
A Woolwich Township Council was organized on January 21st, 1850. The councillors were: John Meyer, Edward Passmore, Peter Wenger, Peter Hay, and Wm. Veitch. They met "at Conestoga, in Kurtz's tavern." The members chose John Meyer as reeve and named James Dow as clerk and treasurer; Moses Springer as assessor on the east side of the Grand River and Christian Hurst on the west wide, each at 6 pounds ($24) a year; and Wm. Reynolds as collector, with a salary of five and a half per cent. of his collections. Charles Hendry was appointed auditor.
The council ordered a seal and studied a plan for building a bridge across the Conestoga River; appointed a road surveyor and considered the advisability of appointing a local superin-tendent of schools. For a number of years schools, bridges, roads, and the regulation of taverns were the chief items of business.
Waterloo County's provisional municipal council met in Berlin on May 3rd, 1852. Woolwich was represented by Reeve John Meyer and Deputy-Reeve Peter Wenger.

King Street, Kitchener
Next easterly were the foundry buildings of Huber & Ahrens, operated from 1840 to 1853. There were four separate buildings, 30 or 40 feet back from the King Street line. In the moulding shop, Mr. Stroh remembers seeing the glittering metal run out from the cupola, at casting time, when he was a boy. The woodworking and power building was a two-storey brick structure with a smoke stack about 50 feet high. The second floor of the building was used for painting and finishing. On the Foundry Street side there was an outside stairway and incline to let down finished machinery. A third building was used for making agricultural machines, threshing cylinders and ploughs. Separators were not made at that time. Near Foundry Street there was a two-storey building with gable toward King Street, used also for woodworking and for the office. In this building three pianos, the first to be made in Berlin, were turned out in 1852. These were upright pianos, hand-made all except the keyboard. The artisan was J. Maas and he made the pianos, one for Charles Ahrens, one for Henry S. Huber and one for Charles Hendry of Conestoga. This latter building was later moved alongside of Winger's pump shop and used as a cigar factory for a time; eventually it was converted into a dwelling. The moulding shop of the foundry was later used as an ashery. After Mr. Ahrens died in 1853 the foundry buildings were sold by auction to Sheriff Davidson who owned them for a number of years.
