Waterloo Township Through Two Centuries by Elizabeth Bloomfield
By 1955 the effects of modernization and urbanization were beginning to show in Centreville. The new Howard Robertson school for School Section 5 was opened in December 1953, a prime feature of its location on Morgan Avenue being “its remoteness from highway traffic.”195 The old school site was sold for $16,000 to Michael and John Lauer who developed it as a restaurant, the Village Inn.196 General population growth and expanded services in the township created new administrative demands and new offices for Waterloo Township were opened in 1954 on Parkway Drive. The original 1868 building was moved away to serve as the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, and Harold S. Westbrook bought its site for the Centre Villa Motel in 1955

    • SELL TWP. HALL SITE FOR $9,500

Site of the present Waterloo township hall was sold this week to Harold Westbrook of Kitchener for $9,500.

It is reported Mr. Westbrook plans to build a $65,000 motel on the property which will become vacant when township officers are transferred to a new building.

At a previous meeting council received a bid of $8,500 from him but thought the property was worth more. He then raised his bid by $1,000. Several councillors advocated "hanging on" for a better price.

The idea of some ratepayers in holding the land for a park was ruled out as the half-acre lot was regarded too small and too near busy highways.

Councillor Joseph Zinger, property and office committee chairman, was authorized to sell pump, furnace, discarded furniture and fittings from the present buildings when the move is made to new quarters.

Contractors L. Riehl & Son of New Hamburg were thanked for successful completion of township shed and given final contract payment.
They did a good job and if they made any mistakes were ready to come back and rectify them," said Deputy Reeve Leonard Burton.
