- Ex - PUC Head Dies
The manager of the Sault Public Utilities Commission for 30 years, Wesley M. Cornell, died Sunday at the age of 82.
Mr. Cornell passed away at the Plummer Memorial Hospital after suffering from ill health for the past several years. He had retired from service with the PUC in 1954.
In tribute to Mr. Cornell, flags are at half-mast today both at City Hall and the Public Utilities building on Queen Street East.
For many years, Mr. Cornell was one of the most familiar and important figures in the Sault's civic life. He became an employee in the water and light service in April 1916 and joined the PUC when it was formed in January of the following year.
Mr. Cornell assumed the position of PUC manager not long after its formation and retained that post until his retirement in 1954. Throughout this long tenure of office, he gained a reputation for sound financial administration a policy which paid excellent dividends for the PUC and the city.
On a number of occasions during Mr. Cornell's managership, the PUC was able turn over surplus funds to assist in the city's development.
In addition to his career with the PUC, Mr. Cornell was active in real estate. He also was a strong supporter of his church.
Besides his wife Lily, Mr. Cornell leaves one daughter - Mrs. James McLarty (Lillian) of the Sault. The funeral will be held from the Langstaff Funeral Home Tuesday at 3 p.m. with interment in Greenwood Cemetery.
