• Notes

  Robert Strang (1833-1900) Insurance agent. Born at Montreal, Quebec on 7 December 1833, the oldest son of Struthers and Janet Strang, brother of Andrew Strang. He was educated at the Jesuit College in Montreal then, at the age of 16, he moved to Waterloo County, Ontario to manage a grist and saw mill belonging to his uncle. In 1871 he came to the Red River Settlement and established a general agency for several Ontario manufacturing and supply firms. Several years later he turned to the insurance business which he continued up to the time of his death. He was married twice. A daughter from his first marriage was married to E. G. Pennock of Rat Portage, Ontario. With second wife Henrietta (1844-?) he had two sons, Robert Strang and Reginald Strang (b 1870). He served for several years as a Winnipeg city alderman, as vice-president and president of the Manitoba Board of Fire Underwriters, a director of the first hail insurance company, and president of the St. Andrew's Society of Winnipeg.
