Notes |
- "DOUGLASS, ROBERT according to the Canadian Biographical History, was born in Nelson Township, Halton County on June 8, 1833, the son of Robert Douglass of New York State. The 1861 census lists him as bom in the U. S. A., thirty five years of age. As both accounts have the correct name of his wife, we are offered a choice.
He received his medical degree from Queen's University in 1855 and went into practice at Jarvis for three or four years. His introduction to this county took place through a card in the Berlin Telegraph on May 11, 1860:
R. Douglass M. D. SURGEON &c.
Winterbourne- office hours from 8 to 10 a. m. and from 8 to 6 p. m. daily.
This card appeared until May 31, 1861 when he moved to Port Elgin. In that place he had a good practice and was active in community and professional affairs. In 1867 he ran as the Reform candidate for the House of Commons for his riding. He was listed in the Ontario Medical Register until 1887. "
