  • Notes
    • THOM, JOHN CONDIE was the subject of a number of conflicting reports, particularly with reference to his age. The census of 1861 gives his age as 32, birthplace Scotland. His father was James Thom, of Winterbourne.

He was a graduate of the University of Toronto in 1861, and on July 19th that year his card which ran until February 7 1862, appeared in the Berlin Telegraph.

Dr. Thom Licentiate Provincial Medical Board, Physician, Surgeon &c. Winterbourne.

      The paper commented.

We would direct attention to the professional card of Dr. Thom who has commenced the practice of his profession in Winterbourne. The fact of Dr. Thom having taken a high standing in the University, and acting in the capacity of assistant surgeon in the Toronto Hospital will go far to secure confidence in his professional skill.

He practiced later in Garafraxa, Streetsville and Woodbridge where he died on September 14, 1901. The Canadian Practitioner and Review in volume 26, 1901 said of him.

In the latter village (Woodbridge) he was engaged for many years in a large and laborious practice. He was very popular as a physician and highly respected as a good citizen by all classes of the community.

In an article describing an operation in The Canada Lancet on March 1, 1878 Dr. Thom of Douglas gave the anesthetic - unable to locate Douglas on today's maps.
