Notes |
- Bingham, G. W., M.D. Is a native of Canada. Born, 1831. Moved here, 1857.
Illustrated Atlas of the County of Waterloo, H. Parsel & Co., Toronto - 1881
_____________________________
BINGHAM, GEORGE WASHINGTON was introduced to the Berlin community by a card in Der Deutsche Canadier of October 5, 1854. According to the Canada Gazette his licence was not granted until November 22, 1856, but apart from this there is no information regarding his antecedents or education.
On April 8, 1859 the Berlin Telegraph reported that he had been entertained at a supper at Mr. Weaver's Hotel "Queen's Arms" as he was about to move to Burford. This may have been his intention, but he accepted instead a partnership with Dr. Wm. Bell of Ayr, where he remained for about fifteen years.
On April 29, 1874 the Dumfries Reformer copied an item from the Waterloo Chronicle:
"We understand that Dr. Bingham of Ayr, is about to become a resident of our village, indeed would have been such before this time, had the scarcity of house accommodation not retarded the fulfillment of his design. He has entered into partnership with Dr. Walden, whose practice has become so extensive as to be burdensome. We understand that Dr, Bingham stands high in his profession, and will make a worthy coadjutor of our old friend Dr. Walden. .."
About the only reference in his Ayr days is in the 1871 census report which gives his age as 41 years, his wife's name as Mary, and lists six children.
In 1896 the Weekly Record of April 30 made him the subject of an article:
Dr. Bingham, Waterloo, well known litterateur, is engaged preparing a sketch of the work and life of Homer Watson, jointly for the Commercial Travellers Magazine of New York, and the Canadian Magazine. The article will be illustrated with views of some of Mr. Watson's famous landscapes. The Doctor, of all persons, will be able to do Mr. Watson justice, since they have been lifelong friends, and he has a highly cultivated knowledge of art and artists, as well as being one of the foremost literary men in the province.
A further reference on September 24th gives the title of this sketch as "A Canadian Landscapist", and indicates that it was also published in the September issue of the Home Magazine. Other than these items there is little reference or information concerning what must have been a lengthy career. After he retired, date unknown, he went to live in Hamilton with his son G. S. Bingham, surviving him by only a few months. His death occurred at the residence of his daughter Mrs. Carl Kranz at 83 South Queen Street on June 17, 1922. He was at this time in his 94th year.
