Service was held at the funeral chapel of S.S. Russell and Son, and interment was in Palermo United Church Cemetery.
Born at Wellesley, Ont., in November 30, 1894, the late Mr. Wettlaufer moved to Palermo with his family sixty years ago. He attended Palermo public school and for many years took an active part in community affairs.
He was a member of Palermo United Church, and sang in the choir until a year ago. For five years he was church treasurer.
Mr. Wettlaufer is survived by his wife, the former Ethel Giles of Merton; three sons, George, Harold and Ronald, all of Palermo; two grandchildren, Jerry and Kenneth; a brother, James, of Brantford; and four sisters, Mrs. Ina Wilson, Regina; Mrs. Charlotte Waterbury, New York; and Mrs. Etta Christner and Mrs. Ada Hill, both of Palermo.
Mr. and Mrs. William Giles, Merton, Ont., annouce the engagement of their daughter, Ethel Irene, to Eckhardt Wettlaufer, youngest son of George and the late Mrs Wettlaufer, of Palermo, the marriage to take place the middle of September. SOURCE: Wettlaufer, Eckhardt (Engagement notice) appeared in Canadian Champion (Milton, ON), 11 Sep 1924, p. 3, column 4, Milton Public Library.
He is credited for inventing Canada's Crokinole (pronounced 'croke-in-ohl') board game. A round wooden game board with small round wooden discs. Believed to have been invented in Tavistock,Ontario,in 1876 by Eckhardt Wettlaufer,he created the game for his son's fifth birthday. The game is played by flicking the round discs from the outside of the board into the higher scoring rings in the middle of the board.
