Notes |
- Mrs. Louisa Shuert Dies In Elmira At Age Of 100
One of the oldest residents of Kitchener and of Waterloo county, Mrs. Louisa Shuert, 100, died Sunday night at the Elmira Private Hospital where she had been a resident for the past two years.
She was the former Louisa Haack and was born between Conestogo and St. Jacobs. She is the last surviving member of her family but has numerous relatives In the district.
Mrs. Schuert was active through-out her life and for a while operated a boarding house which she gave up in her 97th year. As a child she wasn't expected to live to womanhood and for the past 25 years she took daily exercises to keep in good physical condition and credited them to some extent for her longevity.
For many years she operated a dressmaking establishment on the south side of King street between Benton and Queen streets. She was an expert seamstress and employed several girls in her shop.
In conjunction with the dressmaking business she also worked as a milliner and made and sold women's hats when styles were somewhat more opulent than they are today.
About 40 years ago with the earnings from her business she purchased a house at the corner of Weber and Scott streets and she operated her dressmaking business on the second floor. Her success was all the more remarkable considering that she had no formal education. Her measurements were done with-out the aid of pencil and paper.
