- Death of Capt. J.G. Ainslie
The many friends in Owen Sound of Capt. John G. Ainslie will learn with deep regret of his death last evening. He had been in ill health for some time but has been declining rapidly for some months. His death last evening, while not unexpected, is none the less a sever shock to his many friends her.
The late Capt. Ainslie was born near Galt, Ontario, nearly sixty-five years ago, the younger son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Adam Ainslie. He was only few years of age when he came with his parents to Leith, Ont. which was then a prominent Georgian Bay port. Practically all his life he has been engaged in the lumber business and he has been among the most prominent in that business on the Georgian Bay. He was first connected with the Maitland and Rixon company, and later was a member of the firm Rixon-Ainlie-Stoddart Ltd. In his youth he was one of the city's best known athletes and he at one time held the oarsman's championship of Owen Sound. He was a well versed in marine matters and held captain's papers although his regular occupation was not that of a sailor. He was a Presbyterian and attended Divison Street Presbyterian Church. The late Capt. Ainslie was thoroughly a gentleman and was highly esteemed by his large circle of friends both in Owen Sound and at Leith.
Capt. Ainlie was unmarried and was the last surviving member of his family of which the late Mrs. Henry Rixon and the late Mr. Alexander Ainslie were members. For a large number of years he has made his home with the late Mr. and Mrs. Rixon and his only relatives here are his nieces, the Misses Rixon and Mrs. Broderick of New York, and Mr. Rixon Broderick-Owen Sound Sun-Times.
Many people on Manitoulin will remember Capt. Ainslie of the firm of Maitland-Rixon Co. as he frequently visited the Island some years ago in company with the late Wm. Stoddart, both of whom were purchasing agents in the interest of the above mentioned firm of which they were members.
