- Webco Sports owner loved his customers
Bill Weber of Kitchener
When family members still refer to a loved one as Billy, well into his 80s, he must have been a pretty terrific fellow: fun, happy and with a childlike enthusiasm for life.
That was Bill Weber, retired owner of Webco Sports and a man who truly enjoyed himself, whether it was relaxing at the cottage with his second wife Pat Tummon, playing drums in a jazz band or dropping by the store for a gab session with customers and his daughter Cindy Weber, who took over the landmark Kitchener business 22 years ago.....
Bill and his sister Bonnie were born in Detroit where their parents lived while their father, Mel, worked for an automotive parts manufacturer. Adventurous Mel had left his hometown of Kitchener in 1924 to join the U.S. air force in California as an engine mechanic and parachute rigger. After two years, he hitchhiked back to Kitchener to marry high school sweetheart Sadie Dubrick. Together the couple returned to the U.S., where Mel got a job in Detroit and where they had the first two of their four children. The family returned to Kitchener in 1932.....
A musician to the end, Bill had played with his band at a retirement home on New Year's Eve, then left immediately afterward with Pat for an eight-day family vacation in Florida. It was when the couple had returned to their Kitchener condo and put the key in the door that Bill collapsed. He died soon afterward in hospital from an aortic aneurysm.1a
