Notes |
- Apple Source
Kitchener, Canada - Apples with a unique flavor all their own grow on this tree near Kitchener, Caanda. And for farmer Milton Pfohl, shown standing in the shade of the tree, the unusual apples provided a windfall of $2,750. after a lapse of 15 years. In 1943, farmer Pfohl noticed that the tree, unlike the other trees in hsi orchard, seemed to be remarkably resistant to prevailing insects and diseases. He remembered that the tree was only a seedling when moved on the farm, and that it started to bear fruit when onbly about four feet tall. Phohl took a graft fromn the tree, as well as some leaves and the apples themselves, and sent them to the Stark Bros. Nursery in the U. S. for experimentation. It took 15 years, but the Nursery finally paid Pfohl the money for all rights to any grafts taken from the the unsual apple tree.
