Notes |
- Deplorable Railway Accident - A most distressing accident occurred on the Galt and Guelph Railway on Wednesday afternoon last, between Galt and Preston, whereby a fine, stalwart young man named Archibald Hogg, a native of this town, met with his death. For over a year past, Mr. Hogg has been acting as brakesman on this line, and on the afternoon in question was acting in that capacity on the express train for the north passing Galt at 5 o'clock. Shortly after leaving Galt, it would appear that Mr. Hogg's hat blew off and he went forward to the engine to get another one from the fireman. Having got it he proceeded to return to his post on the passenger car, getting on the top of the cars for this purpose; and while walking back towards the last car the train passed beneath the bridge known as "Clemens' Bridge," a short distance out of Preston Station. At this time, the deceased must have been standing or walking upon the top of the cars with his back to the engine, for the evidence points to his having received a terrible blow on the back of the head, while his forehead and check are also cut and bruised. The blow must have knocked the deceased off the car, but he was not missed until the train reached Preston. When it was found that he was not on the train the hands on the train coming south - which crosses the up-train to Preston Station - were notified to keep a look out for him, and he was fond just at the bridge, lying alongside the track. When found he was alive, but insensible. He was brought to Galt on the train and conveyed as speedily as possible to the residence of his brother-in-law, Mr. Peter Campbell, and Dr. Philips summoned. An examination, however, showed that all earthly aid was useless, as Mr. Hogg at the time was dying, and in a very short time he breathed his last. Mr. Hogg was a son of Mr. James Hogg, for so many years a respected resident of this town and vicinity, and was in the 29th year of his age. His parents and relatives have the sympathy of the whole town with them in the severe blow which has been permitted to fall upon them.
