    • ONE OF THE OLDEST PIONEERS PASSES AWAY

The death occurred on Tuesday of this week, February 14, 1922, of Mr. Frederick Stade, at the ripe old age of 93 years. The late Mr. Stade was born in Mecklenberg Germany, in the town of Gross Seamon on the 3rd day of August, 1829, and in the year 1852 was married to Miss Sophia Ledke. In 1854 they came to Canada, crossing the Atlantic on a sailing vessel, the voyage lasting 9 weeks and 3 days. Their first stopping place was at Berlin, Ont., but they soon removed to Oxford County, Bright Station, in Blenheim Township, and in Feb. 1858, they moved to Bruce County, Township of Brant, and later settled on a farm on the 9th Concession, 31st Sideroad. On August 31, 1867, his first wife died, leaving him with four children: Wm. Stade of Hanover, Henry Stade of Chilliwack, B.C., Mrs. William Karstedt of Indianapolis, Indiana and John Stade of Cameron, Missouri. On February 28, 1868, he was married to Mrs. A. Rechley, of Albany, New York, a widow with 5 children, namely: Mrs. Henry Thady of Denver, Colorado, Mrs. J.G. Stump, deceased, Mrs. George Rauchley of San Francisco, Cal., Mrs. Thomas Klippert and Mrs. Josiah Dirstein, both deceased. To Mr. Stade's second union, were born four sons and one daughter, namely: F.B. Stade of Harriston, Ontario; Samuel and Daniel Stade of North Battleford, Saskatchewan; W.L. Stade of Gladstone, Michigan and Annie Stade, deceased. In 1859, Rev. Mr. Stumpf, one of pioneer Baptist Ministers, came to his neighbourhood and in a short time Mr. Stade an a number of others, identified themselves with that faith, and a log church was built on his farm, known to the old pioneers as the Brant Baptist Church. Mr. Stade was a deacon of that denomination for over 60 years. In 1896, he sold his farm and resided in Elmwood until the death of his last wife, who died on August 21, 1911. Since then he lived most of the time with his eldest son, William of Hanover. Besides rearing his large family, he also raised three grandchildren and two orphans, namely: George Stumph of Gravenhurst, Muskoka, Mrs. Jno Dirstein of Elmwood, Mrs. M Pequegnat of Kitchener, Mrs. A. Nuhn of Ingersoll and Miss Minnie Stade. He was dearly beloved by many of the pioneers and friends and was of a kind and hospitable disposition, always showing a willingness to lend a helping hand to the poor and needy. His long life was characterized by many a kind deed. He requested that one of his friends, elder John Shields of London, Ontario, preach his funeral sermon from Rev. 14: 13 and desired to be buried on the farm where he spent many years of toil and he laid alongside his wives and mother. "Heavenly Shore, Will freely give on our once more, It is Well With The Father., It is Well. It is Well"
