Notes |
- A BLAIR NONAGENARIAN-- William A. Blaschke
William A. Blaschke was born in Blair on May 8th, 1880 and at 90 years of age is still driving a motor car, and enjoying it.
He is the son of the late Gustav W. Blaschke and his wife Matilda Harris. They lived in Blair and he attended the Blair School. His grandfather was the first butcher to have a butcher-shop in Preston, which was then just an incorporated village. His father followed in the same butcher-shop and William followed his father in their store known as the Blaschke's Meat Market, at the corner of Guelph and store was sold to the Imperial Oil Company in 1946.
While, Mr. Blaschke was still a young man he came to Doon and Blair, with his father, and later by himself, and sold fresh meat on Monday and Friday later afternoons. This was the only source of fresh meat the majority of the villagers had and this service was much appreciated. After the time when cars and busses were handy this fresh meat service was discontinued.
William Blaschke spent his Sunday afternoons for 40 years as superintendent and teacher of the Doon Presbyterian Sunday School, and on his retirement, as a sign of appreciation he was presented with an illuminated address.
He married Gertrude Moffat, a school teacher, who was born in Osprey , Township in Grey County. On their wedding day they had their first "horseless" carriage drive, as few people at that time had motor cars. However, Mr. Blaschke soon bought a car and has been driving since 1916.
Mr. and Mrs. Blaschke celebrated their Golden Wedding in 1964. They had a son, Ronald, at home and a daughter, Eleanor, Mrs. E. Snyder of London, and two grand daughters.
In 1946 when the Preston store was sold Mr. and Mrs. Blaschke bought a new house in Galt. This is on Coronation Blvd. just across the highway from the South Waterloo Memorial Hospital and both enjoy a beautiful rose garden in the rear of the house.
Mr. Blaschke was ordained an elder of Knox Presbyterian Church, Preston and on the 50th was presented with suitable gifts by the church minister, Rev. A. H. Vair. He is also teacher of a Bible class. In making the presentations to Mr. Blaschke, Rev. Mr. Vair said "He was a sincere "God fearing" man, a faithful servant of God and an earnest student of the Bible.
Mr. Blaschke has two worthwhile hobbies; he grows roses and spends a great deal of time visiting the sick in the hospital.
