WINN, THEOPHILUS BROOKS was welcomed to Waterloo by the Berlin Telegraph on June 17, 1864. He had just graduated from the University of Toronto, and the Telegraph predicted great things for him. His card said that his office was in the Snyder's Block in Waterloo.
The Canadian Champion, Milton, on October 12, 1865, in a reference to him shortly after he had settled in Milton, said:
After he graduated, in order to perfect himself in the art of surgery, he offered his services to the American Government and on their being accepted, he was sent with Grant through his fearful campaign from the Rapidan to Lee's surrender. Dr. Winn rapidly rose until he became Hospital Surgeon to the fifth corps, and was mustered out at the end of his service with the rank of Major of Cavalry.
Note - Since Grant crossed the Rapidan on May 4, 1864, and accepted Lee's surrender on April 9, 1865, Winn's stay in Waterloo must have been exceedingly brief, certainly only a matter of weeks.
