Notes |

_____________
SWAN, THOMAS was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1843. He came with his parents to Canada in 1853, and they settled on a farm near Scarborough. On December 12, 1873 he married Mary Ann Devitt, of Hespeler. He died on July 6, 1887 at Hespeler, and was survived by his widow.
He attended Upper Canada College, Toronto, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. He taught school for several years at Glenmorris and then studies medicine, graduating probably in 1869. One account says he graduated from Edinburgh University, but his card on October 28, 1869 says it was the University of Toronto.
His card in the Dumfries Reformer of that date was accompanied by comment by the paper:
Our readers in Preston and neighborhood will notice that Dr. Swan has located in that village, where he will in future practice Medicine, Surgery, &c. Dr. Swan is well and favorably known in this locality, having occupied the position of Teacher at Glenmorris for several years, and from what we know of his studious habits and desire to excel in his profession, we have every confidence that the people of that section of Waterloo will be supplied with the services of a very efficient medical adviser. His office is at the Klotz. Hotel where he can be consulted from 8 to l0 a. m. and from 2 to 4 p. m.
The same newspaper remarked on his move to Hespeler in the issue of February 2, 1870.
The people of Hespeler are fortunate in securing the services of Dr. Swan who has lately moved to their village and opened an office. Dr. Swan has since his settlement in the County been a very successful practitioner, and as Hespeler and neighborhood will afford a wider field and better opportunities, we look to his future career with confidence.
Winfield Brewster in LaRue de Commerce reports that he started practice in a house that stood immediately back of the Dominion Bank building, and that he later built a white frame house on the site of the present Post Office for his residence and office.
He was appointed coroner for Waterloo County. He served many years as a school trustee. He was a supporter of the Reform party and campaigned for their candidates.
The Dumfries Reformer's Hespeler correspondent said of him on July 14, 1887:
As a physician he stood preeminent at the top of his profession. As a citizen he was public spirited; as a friend he was true as steel. He possessed all the advantages that education could give him, being a most accomplished linguist as well as a musician.
