- COOPER, Arthur
1918 - 2015
Peacefully at the age of 97 surrounded by his family, on September 2, 2015. Survived by Mabel, his loving wife of 73 years. Dear father and Poppie to children Carol Ann (Lorne), Donna Mae (Lance), Bradley (Nicole), Sandi (late Stephen) and Kathryn (Stephen); grandchildren Kevin, Craig, Kent, Erica, Alexandra, Rebecca, Philip, Ariana, Quinn and Cole; great-grandchildren Thalia, Rhys, Nolan, Keira, Hayden, Adeline and Harrison. Also survived by his sisters Marion and Isabel.
Art was born on the family farm in Wallenstein Township, Ontario and began his career in aircraft maintenance with the Flying Club in London, Ontario. Legend has it that Art first spied Mabel in a raspberry patch and immediately knew she was the one for him. In 1942, they married and moved to St. Jean, Quebec when Art was transferred to the AOS #9.
Following the war, Art worked for TCA in the early years of commercial air transport. He remained a loyal Air Canada employee for 33 years, retiring in 1978. During his happy retirement years Art's passions included large family gatherings, coffee with fellow AC retirees, curling and, above all else, lending a helping hand to whoever needed help. Art was living proof that "those who are happiest are those who do the most for others". The pride and joy of Art's retirement years was his 1932 Chev, the "twin" of the first car he and Mabel ever owned!
A celebration of Art's life will take place on September 5, 2015 at Rideau Funeral Home, 4275 Sources Blvd., Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Qc H9B 2A6 (514) 685-3344, beginning at 12 p.m. followed by a Chapel Service at 1:30 p.m. Burial private. Deepest gratitude for the incomparable care provided by the staff and volunteers at the WIPCR. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the West Island Palliative Care Residence.
