- Marsland Engineering Ltd. was one of the earliest high tech companies in Waterloo Region. Specializing in radio technology and electronics, it was for a time Waterloo's largest industrial employer and Canada's largest privately owned electronics manufacturer. Marsland Engineering became a major supplier to such companies as North Electric and IBM before the company was sold in 1969.1a

- Marsland, Stanley - Passed away peacefully, at home, on Saturday, April 9, 1988, after a 10 year struggle with Alzheimer's disease.
Mr. Marsland was born in Staleybridge, Cheshire, England on July 10, 1910, and emigrated to Canada with his family when he was 10 years old. He was raised in Cornwall, Ontario and then in Kitchener.
Always facinated with electronics, and possessed of an inventive genius, Mr. Marsland attended K-W Collegiate and after he left school he started his own electronics business. This business grew to be come Marsland Engineering Limited, and when Mr. Marsland sold it and retired in 1969, the business employed 1400 people, and had become Waterloo's largest employer.
During the Second World War, Mr. Marsland spent much of his time commuting to the United States, where he was Vice-President of Roller Smith Company in Bethlehem and Allentown, Pennsylvania. Under his stewardship, Roller Smith won the prestigious Army-Navy "E" award as an outstanding defence contractor.
After the Second World War, Mr. Marsland became a Technical Advisor to the Federal Department of Defense Production in Ottawa. He gave freely of his time, and during this period he worked for C.D. Howe, a man for whom he had the utmost respect.
In the mid 1960's, due to Mr. Marsland's initiative, his company, Marsland Engineering Limited, received the Ontario achievement award for its outstanding export performance and its job creation.
In 1967, Mr. Marsland was awarded the Confederation Medal for his outstanding contribution to Canadian industry.
After his retirement from industry in 1969, Mr. Marsland served two terms as a Director of the Royal Canadian Mint. As a director he was technically involved in equipping and tooling the new mint in Winnipeg which was built during this period. At this same time, Mr. Marsland built the Marsland Centre in downtown Waterloo.
In 1974, Mr. Marsland left Canada and became a resident of Tucker's Town, Bermuda. He visited Canada only briefly after that until last year when he returned for medical treatment.
A keen flyer and boating enthusiast, Mr. Marsland was an honorary member of the Waterloo-Wellington Flying Club and a member of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club. He was a member of the Rideau Club, the M id-Ocean Club and he was a Shriner.
Mr. Marsland is survived by his wife, Florence Louise (Bauer); his only son, Lawrence; his daughter-in-law, Margaret; his grandson, Bradley; his granddaughter, Melanie; his great-granddaughter, Alexan dra and two brothers, John and Walter, all of Kitchener-Waterloo.
He was predeceased by his mother and father, Miriam and Samuel Marsland and two brothers, Hugh and Eric.
Mr. Marsland's family will receive friends at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on Monday (today) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, Waterloo, Tuesday at 2 p.m., Rev. Eric Weber and Rev. A.L. Conrad officiating. Interment to follow in Parkview cemetery, Waterloo.
It is suggested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions could be made to one of the following organizations: Freeport Hospital Building Fund, Kitchener; University of Waterloo, School of Engineering or St. John's Lutheran Church Building Fund.
