Notes |
- DEATH OF THOMAS LYNCH - The subject of this notice died last Friday, at the advanced age of three score and one years. He was born in Ireland, in the county of Westmeath, in the year 1817. After receiving a fair education, he engaged in the occupation of gardener, which employment he continued till he was 23 years old. Bent on seeing more of the world, he along with some others emigrated to Canada, and arrived in Ayr in the year 1840. A year later he rented the farm now occupied by Mr. John Bell, of Blenheim, and as an adjunct to his farm resources, he took jobs of chopping, and logging whenever offered. Continuing this work for five years, he found himself possessed of a little money, a log house and several acres under crop, but not being content with the quiet solitude of being alone, a restless instinct led him to indulge in vague thoughts and dreamy regrets of one he left at home. His resolution was soon definitely taken, and a few hasty preparations made, he started for the home of his fathers. Meeting with Marsila White, with whom he had a former and intimate acquaintance, he explained his desire. His proposition met with a hearty approval, and the sanction of her parents being obtained, they were married soon after his arrival. In the following spring accompanied by his wife, his father and his brother, Patrick, he again came to Canada, and settled on his bush farm. After clearing 75 acres his lease expired. He then commenced teaming for D. Manly. In this capacity he was shown many marks of attention by William Baker, who entrusted him with carrying valuable parcels to and from Paris station. On the completion of the CPR to Ayr, the teaming between Ayr and Paris was entirely cut off. He then began delivering merchandise to the various stores of the village. This he continued to do until a few years ago, when he retired from active life. The deceased was bred a Catholic, yet it was pleasing to see the candor of his Christian conduct to others of an opposite faith. Like the old patriarch, his tone of spirit was "let there be no strife between thee and me, for we are brethren." Some pen, as expressive as his wit, must here after commemorate a character so truly respected and thoroughly beloved by all who could boast of his friendship or who enjoyed his intimacy
