Passing of William Oliver - A Short Sketch Of His Active Career - The removal by death from among us of Mr. Wm. Oliver on Sunday last leaves a great blank in a wide-spread community. Mr. Oliver was born in the township of North Dumfries in the year 1836, and during his early life experienced the hardships incident to pioneer times. He was the youngest of the family, which comprised a brother and four sisters, and first saw the light of day on the farm now occupied by Mrs. John Morton, near Ayr, on the Galt Road, and on which he spent his youth and a good part of his married life. Later he moved to a farm north of Plattsville, for about 12 years.
Having retired from farming some 20 years ago, he came to live in Ayr, having built the house on Northumberland St., where he continued to reside until his death. Mr. Oliver's demise will be felt in many directions, his life having been a busy one, and one touching the interests of the public at many points. A left-handed man, (it was his misfortune to lose his left arm by a gunshot accident while he was yet in his teens) but with one arm he accomplished much more than many do with two. A skillful and prosperous farmer, and a good judge of stock, his services were frequently in demand as a judge of sheep at the fairs. He was also deeply interested in intellectual affairs, entering the municipal, political and literary fields with equal success.
Several of our public institutions, such as the Ayr Farmers' Mutual fire Insurance Company, the Ayr Cemetery Co., and the North Dumfries Council, owning much to his labor and faithful efforts, both as member and office-bearer. For many years he was secretary of the insurance company and reeve of the township, member of the Ayr Pubic School Board and a Justice of the Peace. In church life Mr. Oliver was equally active. He was ordained to the eldership of Knox church in 1878, and shortly after his return to the village in 1889, he again became a member of its Session. For many years and up to the end he filled the office of Session Clerk. Both before and since the Plattsville interval he was a teacher in the Sabbath School, of which he was also secretary and treasurer. For some years up to the last annual meeting he also held the position of Bible Society secretary.
It falls to the lot of few men to have been chosen to fill so many positions of honor and trust as Mr. Oliver did. Few men in Ayr could claim a wider or more intimate acquaintance with his fellow citizens, and few have enjoyed such a large share of general esteem and affection. In politics he was an ardent Liberal, but his political activities never interfered with his hearty friendship. Besides filling a large place in secular and religious affairs, he was not unknown in a charitable way, many a poor family being able to testify to his unostentatious benefactions. The world suffers a real loss when such men pass from the sphere of life's activities.
In 1870 Mr. Oliver married Ellen Waugh, who survives him. A brother and sister predeceased him, viz., Thomas and Mrs. John Ashbrooke. Three sisters survive. They are: Mrs. A. Scott, Blenheim, Mrs. Peter Hope, Ayr, and Mrs. Geo. Hope, Brantford. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon, services conducted by deceased's pastor, Rev. John Thomson, being held at the church, where a very large congregation gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to one all loved and esteemed. Mr. Thomson was assisted by Rev. D. I. Ellison, Rev. T. H. Ibbott and Rev. Dr. Gray. The pallbearers were Messrs. Douglas Lillico, Jas. Malone, John Welsh, John Shields, Stephen Marshall and John Folsetter. Among the relatives present were Messrs. T. and W. Osbrooke, (Paris) T. O. James, William and Geo. Scott; Mrs. Shanks, (Brantford), Mrs. Peter Hope, the Misses Doughty, (Ayr) and Mr. James Oliver, Burford.
