Rev. Dr. John McPherson Scott Succumbs to Pneumonia
This community sincerely mourns the loss of a popular Toronto-Ayr "Old boy" in the person of Rev. Dr. J. McP. Scott, who passed away at his home in the Queen city on Feb. 25, from an attack of pneumonia. He was born in Ayr in 1850, receiving his rudimentary education here and at the Galt High School, afterwards becoming an arts student at the University of Toronto from which he was graduated with the degree of B.A. in 1887, thence to Knox College, where he acquired a B.D. and was later granted the honorary degree of D.D. by the Theological College at Montreal. He never had but on charge in his whole ministry. On leaving college he organized a mission church in Toronto, which nourished and later became St. John's Church. For upwards of 30 years Dr. Scott ministered to this congregation and saw it grow from a handful of communicants to a membership at his death of about 1200. Dr. Scott was an indefatigable worker, and his labors were not confined to his own congregation. His wonderful activity and great popularity enabled him to accomplish a great deal. In 1912-13 Dr. Scott toured the world in the interests of foreign missions, spending much time in the Orient, where he occasionally preached to large congregations of natives through an interpreter. He and Mrs. Scott were booked for a trip to Scotland, the day of starting being set for the day following his death. Another untoward event in his long and useful career occurred just after his world tour when he narrowly escaped being assassinated in front of his home on Broadview Ave., by a Jew who pulled a revolver and fired point-blank. The bullet, fortunately, struck the Doctor's spectacle case and was deflected. He was twice married. His second wife and a son survive. Dr. Scott visited the scene of his nativity last summer and called on a number of relatives and old friends. Mrs. Jas. Dalzell and Mrs. J. Codling are first cousins, besides whom there are a number of more distant connections. Mrs. Dalzell attended the funeral on Friday.
