- Christian Kloepfer was born in New Germany, County of Waterloo, Ont., December 22, 1847, and is of German descent, his parents having emigrated from Baden, Germany, to Canada about 1842. He was educated at the Parochial School in New Germany. Mr. Kloepfer is in business as a wholesale carriage hardware merchant. He married in June, 1880, Elizabeth Murphy, of Guelph. He is a director of several trading institutions, and has been an alderman of Guelph. He was first elected to the House of Commons at the general elections held in 1896. Conservative. Guelph, O.

Well Known Guelph Man, Was Pres. Capital Brewing Co.
Guelph, Feb. 9-Christian Kloepfer, ex-M.P. one of Guelph's best known manufacturers and industrial magnates, man also well known over the Dominion in monetary matters, passed away this morning, after having been ill for a week from a cold, which developed into pneumonia. He was born in Baden, Ont.. 1847. In 1867 he learned the hardware business In Guelph with the late John Horsman. He purchased from Mr. Horsman his coal business and still continued for some time with him afterwards starting a small wholesale, carriage and hardware business in connection with the coal yard. This business developed into the C. Kloepfer Company Limited, which has a branch in Toronto.
At the time of his death he was president of the C. Kloepfer Company. Limited of Toronto and Guelph. of the Raymond Mfg. Company of Guelph; of the Dominion Linen Mfg. Company of Guelph, and of the Capital Brewing Company of Ottawa. In former years he took an active part in public life. In 1896 he ran for the federal house against the late James Innes, and was successful holding the seat until 1900. He ran again but was defeated by Hugh Guthrie, the present member, who also defeated him in 1904.
The late Mr. Kloepfer was well known in the Capital. It is stated that he was slated for a senatorship.
