    • Cambridge teen admits accidentally killing longtime friend with shotgun blast

Alex Resendes fled his family's house before paramedics and police arrived, sparking a manhunt

      By Gordon Paul Record Reporter

KITCHENER - A Cambridge teenager admits he accidentally killed his longtime friend with a shotgun blast.

Moments after the shooting, Alex Resendes fled, sparking a police manhunt.

Resendes, now 19, pleaded guilty in Kitchener court on Wednesday to manslaughter, firearms offences and cocaine trafficking. He was originally charged with second-degree murder.

The killing happened on Oct. 17, 2020, in Resendes' bedroom in the basement of his family's house on Birkinshaw Road in the Galt area of Cambridge. His stepfather and grandmother were in other parts of the home and his mother was in the garage.

Around 9 p.m. Resendes was hanging out with Mark Chaves, 19, when Resendes picked up a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun and held it near his friend, court was told.

Resendes, who was not licensed to possess firearms and not trained in how to handle them safely, put his finger on the trigger.

"While handling the loaded prohibited firearm, Mr. Resendes inadvertently depressed the trigger and caused the firearm to discharge," said Crown prosecutor Aaron McMaster, reading from an agreed statement of facts.

The blast from close range hit Chaves in the head and neck.

"Mr. Resendes did not intend to shoot or kill Mr. Chaves," McMaster said, adding there "were no known conflicts" between the two.

Resendes' mother was having a smoke in the garage when she heard a bang and rushed inside. She thought her mother had fallen.

Her son was yelling: "Mom, help me, help me. It was an accident. Help me."

Resendes, 18 at the time, told her he accidentally shot Chaves. He then began trying to carry him up the basement stairs.

His mother "took Mr. Chaves from Mr. Resendes and laid him down on the basement floor," McMaster said.

She noticed Chaves was still alive and yelled to Resendes' stepfather to call 911. Resendes screamed, "No, mom, help me here."

"(She) replied that there was no helping and that they had to call someone," McMaster said.

Resendes' stepfather walked toward the garage while calling 911. "Mr. Resendes began to follow (him) to the garage," court was told. "Mr. Resendes was screaming to not call the police."

His stepfather told him he had no choice. "Mr. Resendes attempted unsuccessfully to interfere with the call," McMaster said.

His mother went to check on Chaves and his stepfather performed CPR.

Before police and paramedics arrived, Resendes fled on foot, unbeknownst to his mother and stepfather. He brought the shotgun and a small safe that held handguns, ammunition, cocaine and cash. Chaves was pronounced dead in the basement about 30 minutes after the shooting.

With Resendes on the run, Waterloo Regional Police launched a manhunt. They released his photo to the media and warned the public he may be armed.

Resendes dropped the shotgun and safe near his house.

Later that night, he called a female friend. She agreed to meet him in a forest near the Grand River. She brought blankets.

Resendes told her he accidentally shot someone and "didn't know what to do," McMaster said.

A male friend said Resendes contacted him. He said he sent Resendes screenshots of a news story about the shooting.

"What the f*** - this wasn't supposed to happen," Resendes told him. "All f***ed up."

Later he said, "Man, can't deal with this - not going to jail."

Resendes asked him to pick him up. The friend refused.

On Oct. 18 around 9 p.m. - almost exactly 24 hours after the killing - Resendes surrendered at a regional police station.

Inside Resendes' safe, police found two loaded .22-calibre semi-automatic handguns (the serial number on one of them had been ground off), $8,745 in cash, 88 grams of cocaine, 11 rounds of .22-calibre ammunition and seven rounds of 12-gauge shotgun ammo.

In his bedroom, Resendes had 10 grams of cocaine, baggies, a digital scale and a hydraulic drug press.

Resendes, who has no prior record, pleaded guilty to manslaughter, weapons offences and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. A sentencing hearing in front of Justice Melanie Sopinka is set for March 28.

Almost 900 people donated a total of $74,000 to help pay for Chaves' funeral and other expenses.

He left behind his parents, Carmela and Tony, his brother Jason, and his extended family of aunts and uncles.

In online condolences, Chaves was described as a best friend and a sweet boy. For his obituary, his family posted a picture of him driving. Chaves expressed his passion for racing on a Facebook page in 2020. His mother adorned it with an emoji heart.

Under any other circumstances we would have loved for all of you to join us at the Funeral Mass at St. Ambrose Church. It is definitely something Mark would have wanted. Unfortunately, due to the current pandemic, the capacity of the church is limited, so we are asking for people to be respectful and allow the Mass to be for family and close friends only. With regards to the visitation, it will be from 5-9p.m., which is open for all to join. Please keep in mind that it will be a walk through, there will be no hugging and kissing at all, due to Covid19. Again, we wish things were different and deeply appreciate all the love and support that has been given by our community, however we will very much appreciate your cooperation at this very difficult time.

**The Chaves Family asks that on the day of the Funeral everyone please go to the church instead of the Funeral Home, so the family can have their time to say their final goodbyes.** Entombment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Paris, ON.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Mark Chaves
