    • Oldest Resident Of Floradale, John Mogk Dies


      Floradale's oldest resident, John Mogk, 96, died Monday at Elmira Private Hospital following a lengthy illness.

      Born at Heidelberg, June 5, 1852, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Mogk. When he was three years old, his parents moved to Upper Woolwich. The first tree cut on the property was used to build a cabin for the Mogk family.

      Mr. Mogk recalled that in his childhood wild animals roamed the woods of Waterloo County. Wolves and bears were common and made the woods dangerous for the children.

      Bears often tried to get into the Mogk home by the windows, he said. His father was once attacked by wolves while walking home from Elmira with provisions.

      Mr. Mogk had been a patient at the Elmira Private Hospital for 14 months. He attended Trinity Lutheran Church, Floradale.

      Surviving are three sons, Alfred of Floradale, John of Kegworth, Sask., and Harry of Kitchener. The funeral service was held from the Dreisinger Funeral Chapel, Elmira, at 2 p.m. Wednesday to Trinity Lutheran Church, Floradale for services. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
