- PROMINENT BUSINESS MAN PASSES AWAY
John Bahnsen, Manager Globe Furniture, Dies Suddenly at Daughter's Home in Wisconsin.
A wide circle of friends and business associates were shocked to learn of the sudden death of John Bahnsen, 47 Albert St., Waterloo, managing director and secretary-treasurer of the Globe Furniture Company Limited. He passed away while on a visit to his daughter, Mrs. Walter Auman, at Manitowac, Wisconsin, at 11.15 Saturday morning, death being due to heart failure. He was in his 71st year.
The late Mr. Bahnsen was born in Germany and at the age of 21 came to America, making his first home in Manitowac, Wis.. Twenty-three years later he moved with his family to Chicago where Mr. Bahnsen and his son, Mr. C. Bahnsen, were prominently identified with the business of the American Seating Company. In 1911 Mr. Bahnsen moved to Waterloo and assumed the managership of the Globe Furniture. During his residence here he has proved a worthy citizen, taking a deep interest in the welfare of the town. He made many friends who sincerely regret his passing.
Mr. Bahnsen, who had recovered from a stroke suffered last year, left on Sept. 21st with Mrs. Bahnsen on a motor trip to his old home in Manitowac, Wis., where they were guests of his daughter, Mrs. Auman. For some time he has suffered from heart attacks. Until a few weeks ago he was at his desk at the Globe Furniture attending to business as usual.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Bahnsen, one son, Cornelius Bahnson, superintendent of the Globe Furniture plant, two daughters, Mrs. George Skelton, 40 George St., Waterloo, Mrs. W. Auman in Wisconsin, and one sister in Germany. Mr. Bahnsen, Jr., left at once for Wisconsin to arrange for conveyance of body to Waterloo for burial.
Outstanding Business Man
Mr. Bahnsen, with knowledge gained in leading furniture plants both in United States and Canada, was recognized as one of the best executives and designers of school and church furniture in America. Coming to Waterloo in 1911 he enlarged the plant of the Globe Furniture Co. and in addition to manufacturing school desks and office furniture a new line was added, that of church and theatre furniture. Mr. Bahnsen was most successful in making equipment for church and theatre of original and artistic design and the business expanded rapidly, making necessary the erection of four additions to the plant in the past twenty years. About a year ago a fine modern office building was erected at a cost of $25,000. The main floor is used for office purposes while the second floor is fitted as a model show room where altars and other furniture is displayed.
In recent years the Globe Furniture has completed large contracts for church furniture including rare designs of carvings and woodwork. Some of the contracts were for London Cathedral, Church of Ascension, Westmount, Montreal, Dominion Dominion Douglas, Montreal, St. Saviour's Church, Waterloo, St. Matthew's Church, Kitchener, and furnishing seating for the million dollar Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto.
Funeral Largely Attended
Business associates, officers and employees of the Globe Furniture Co. and friends in large numbers attended the funeral which took place at the family residence on Wednesday afternoon. A simple but impressive service was conducted by Rev. Mr. Schmieder, pastor of the St. Matthew's Lutheran Church at Kitchener. Interment, was made in the Mausoleum in Kitchener.
At the home the drawing room and casket were banked with beautiful floral offerings from the family and friends. They included a casket blanket from the Bahnsen family, church pew from the Board of Directors of the Globe Furniture Co.! standing cross from Messrs. Edward F., Norman and Thomas Seagram; massive wreath from the large staff of Globe employees.
The pall-bearers were foremen of the various departments in the Globe plant; Christ. Scheifele, Ed. Timm, Max Herz, A. Brown, Harry Kress and Christ. Schondelmayer.

John Bahnsen
Mr. John Bahnsen, the managing director of the Globe Furniture Co. Limited is an old furniture specialist. He was formerly connected with one of the largest American firms, the American Seating Co., at Manitowac, Wisconsin, as factory manager, and later as general superintendent of all the company's factories, filling that important post with much credit, and being instrumental in introducing a number of new lines of manufacture, principally the making of office, school, church and opera fixtures. In September 1911, he removed to Waterloo to take charge of the Globe Furniture Co. and has succeeded in building up a business that he may well be proud of. At the present writing, a new addition is being erected, which will make this plant one of the largest of the kind in the Province. A large number of skilled artisans are constantly employed and in spite of financial stringency, the firm has been busy turning out the products for which they have built up such an excellent reputation.
