  • Notes
    • Mr. Conrad Hett, aged 74, a pioneer of this county, passed away following a brief illness at his home in Hillsboro Saturday afternoon. In the previous afternoon while at work in his back yard he suffered a stroke of apoplexy and was found by his wife about two hours later lying unconscious on the ground. After summoning the aid of neighbors he was carried into his house and the doctor called immediately.

His children, Mr. George Hett and Mrs. R. E. Frobenius, Peabody, were called and a telegram went to Mr. Henry Hett, Washington, Illnois. Only the former two reached the bedside of their father before he died. He passed away without regaining consciousness.

Funeral services were held in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hillsboro, with Rev. H. Schmidt of the Spring Valley Church preaching in German and Rev. George Kettner, Durham, in English. A large number of friends and relatives were in attendance. Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery.

Mr. Conrad Hett was born November 29, 1854 in Erbsville, Ontario, Canada. he grew to manhood there and was baptised and convirmed in the Lutheran Church.

In February 1878, he immigrated to Peabody and strted farming in Wilson Township of this county. In October of the same year he was married to Miss Barbara Ebel, who came form Canada a short time previous. To this union four children were born; Mrs. R. C. Frobenius, Mr. George Hett, Mr. Henry Hett, and Mrs. Mary Walter who died in 1912.

Mr. and Mrs. Hett made their first home on a farm souhwest of Marion. Later he purchased his first farm in Wilson Township after which followed successful years at farming and the carpenter trade.

In 1907 he moved to Hillsboro where he resided until his death on last Saturday. He leaves to mourn his death his wife, two brothers, two sisters, three children, eleven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Mr. and Mrs. Hett celebrated their golden weeking anniversary October 16, 1928, which proved to be a joyful event for these aged people as well as their children, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Hett worked in the real pioneer spirit, starting with meager funds and industriously applying himself until he was able to enjoy covenient prosperity in his later years.

Still more important was the Christian influence which he manifested in his home and community. The blessing which he received from his Creator and the many friends that he made during his earthly life is an indication of the kind and christian life he lived.
