- SCHNARR, Reverend Father Walter, CR The Congregation of the Resurrection announces the death of Father Walter Herman Schnarr, CR on April 12, 2015 of Forest Heights Long Term Care Centre, Kitchener, Ontario. He was 103 years old, and in his 84th year of religious life and 79th year of ordained priesthood. Father Schnarr is predeceased by his parents Edward and Catherine (nee Reitzel) Schnarr, his brothers Emil, Jerome and John and by his sisters Helen and Doretta. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his sister-in- law Mary Ann (John), and also by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Fr. Schnarr professed his religious vows in the Congregation on August 15, 1931 and was ordained to ministerial priesthood on March 14, 1937 at St. Peter's Seminary, London, Ontario. Fr. Walter ministered as a Catholic educator at St. Mary's College, St. Mary's, Kentucky, and St. Jerome's College, Kitchener. In 1977, Fr. Walter relocated to Scollard Hall in North Bay, Ontario where he remained for thirteen years performing administrative duties. In 1990, he moved to Resurrection Manor in Waterloo and learned to use the computer and continued to help manage the finances for the college. Fr. Schnarr held a variety of leadership roles within the Congregation, including assistant rector and then rector of the Resurrectionist's House of Studies at St. Thomas Scholasticate in London and was a member of a number of committees. From gardening to finances, teaching to fishing, Fr. Walter's life was a long, active and respected one. Fr. Walter has the distinction of being the first C.R. to have attained the remarkable milestone of 75 years "plus" of ordained priesthood. His many years of faithful service touched the lives of his students, brother religious, family and friends during his many years of dedicated ministry. His quiet determination, steadfastness, devotion and humbleness were personal traits recognized by all who encountered him. We wish to express our gratitude to the staff of Forest Heights Long Term Care Centre, Kitchener. Visitation of Father Schnarr will take place at Resurrection College, St. Eugene's Chapel, 265 Westmount Road North, Waterloo on Wednesday, April 15th from 7: 00 p.m. to 9: 00 p.m. A Vigil Prayer Service will be held at 8: 30 p.m. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at Resurrection College, at 10: 00 a.m. on Thursday, April 16th. Interment will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery, Kitchener. Reception to follow at Resurrection College. Donations in Fr. Schnarr's memory may be made to the Congregation of the Resurrection for their missions or the care of their retired members and forwarded to 265 Westmount Road North, Waterloo, Ontario, N2L 3G7 or arranged through Erb & Good Family Funeral Home , 171 King Street South, Waterloo, ON N2J 1P7, 519-745-8445, www.erbgood.com.
