- Ralph Tailby, 62, dies in Bahamas
Ralph Tailby, a well-known Twin City tennis player, died Thursday, during a vacation in the Bahamas. Tailby, 62, was a retired partner, but still active consultant, with the chartered accounting firm of Coopers and Lybrand in Kitchener. In 1953, he was ranked the No. 2 tennis player in Ontario and in 1961 won his first Canadian senior singles crown. Tailby was a member of the 1964 and 1974 Canadian teams that won the Gordon Trophy matches, for senior amateur competitors, 45 years and over, against the United States. He was a member of Canadian teams on a number of occasions, including this year. Tailby was born in Kitchener and started playing tennis at the age of 12, when he joined the Waterloo Tennis Club. He was president of the club from 1964 to 1968 and was one of about three persons awarded lifetime memberships in the organization. He won several Ontario and Canadian titles, was Waterloo Tennis Club champion many times and teamed with Bun Cooke, formerly of Kitchener and now of Toronto, to win the Ontario doubles crown four times. During the winter, Tailby played squash. He also helped Barney Lawrence, a Kitchener lawyer and international squash player, form the K-W Squash Club. Tailby twice won the Ontario senior doubles in squash, playing with Tom Fraser of Toronto. Before becoming a partner at Coopers and Lybrand, Tailby worked with his father, Ernest, at Tailby and Tailby, chartered accountants. He was a member of the Rotary Club. Tailby was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Marjorie. He is survived by his wife, the former Lucy E. Kuntz; a son, David of Kitchener; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Ann) Litke of Waterloo, and Patricia of Kitchener; a sister, Dorothy of Kitchener, and five grandchildren. Until recently, Tailby lived at 349 Glasgow Rd., Kitchener. He had a retirement home in Muskoka. Funeral details will be announced Saturday.
