- Jury Say Death Is Accidental
A verdict of purely accidental death was brought in by the coroner's jury which sat at the city hall on Tuesday evening to inquire into the death of nine-year-old Peter Hammer, who was instantly killed by touching a live wire while going home from school at Friday noon.
From the evidence it appeared that the lad had been going from St. Mary's Separate school, along Duke street to his home on Foundry street when he saw the wire lying by the roadside. He picked it up and met with instantaneous death, two young companions becoming frightened his condition and running for home.
Heard Cry
Harvey Hymmen was going Young street at the time and hearing a cry looked down Duke street where he saw the other two boys standing concluded that the boys were merely wrestling and was about to pass a on when something in the appearance of the boy on the ground drew his attention and he decided to investigate the other boys running away on his approach.
Wire Insulated
He found the boying on the ground with the wire grasped in his hand. The portion grasped was insulated but the boy was lying on two or three loops of the wire, the loose end of which was smoking. Mr. Hymmen grasped him by the coat collar and up pulled him free of the wire, at the same time calling to Mr. Valentine Weaver, who was going up Young street. Mr. Hymmen then went to a nearb house and phoned for a doctor and to the fire station for the lung motor.
