Oscar Wile is keeping up the Wile tradit ion as a builder and contractor.
From the Kitchener-Waterloo Record of July 20, 1968
"When Kitchener contractor Oscar Wiles and his wife head for the west coast on a motor holiday, they'll make a point of spending a few days in Edmonton.
The oil capital stop will bring back memories of the time 57 years so when Mr .Wiles heeded the cry of "go west young man, go west."
It was in 1911 when 18 year old Oscar heard of big money to be made in Edmonton as a carpenter or contractor. His father, Isaac Wiles, a carpenter-contractor, was paying Oscar 17 1/2 cents an hour. The pay out west was three times that figure, he was told .
Mr. Wiles went into partnership in Edmonton as a house finisher with an Elmira man for four months and then built cupboards and stairways for an Edmonton house developer.
His pay was 55 cents an hour. He had indeed hit "pay dirt" in the oil capital . But the big money was short lived. His father pleaded with him in daily letters to come home as his foreman had quit. Oscar came home.
He helped build about 10 homes during his 55-cents-an-hour era. The Wiles will try to find them "for sentimental reasons".
In 1927 Mr. Wiles started his own contracting firm and since then his company has built dozens of buildings in this area. They include schools, churches and factory additions.
Mr. Wiles is the Twin Cities' oldest active contractor. As president o f Oscar Wiles and Sons Ltd ., he still signs all the cheques and looks after detail at his office in his home, 5 Maurice Street, Kitchener.
His five sons, however, now look after the ''heavy work" Arthur is vice-president; Donald is supervisor; Norman is an estimator; Peter is general foreman and Richard is an estimator and superrvisor.
The president's wife, Marie is secretary treasurer"
