- Stabbing victim dies in hospital
An 85-year-old Kitchener man who was stabbed in his home, July 14, died Tuesday night, in K-W Hospital. Wilfred Schaefer of 109 Weber St. E., had been in critical condition since the stabbing. Before Schaefer's death, police said they were treating the case as an attempted murder, but they would not comment today on the direction of their investigation. Schaefer's son-in-law, Ernie Kingston, said his father-in-law had lived in his home near Weber and Cedar streets, for about five years. Schaefer had been a cab driver with the former Old Victory cab company in Kitchener and worked as a baggage handler for CNR, Kingston said. Despite his age, he was still "pretty chipper and played crokinole and cards with friends at Sunnyside Home, where he attended a day care program twice a week. "He's the type of person, even at his age, who just loved to relate about where this place was 80 years ago. He knew Kitchener-Waterloo inside out," Kingston said.
