THE GRIM REAPER REMOVES JOHN OTTO FLEISCHHAUER.
There passed away at his home on Frederick street at 9 o'clock on Monday evening the last remaining member of the pioneer German Baptist Church organized in the Canada, person of John Otto Fleischhauer. He had reached the ripe age of 82 years, being born in Hessen Germany in 1820.
Since Thursday inst he had been unconscious a paralytic stroke rendering him speechless and powerless to move. He gradually weakened, the vital spark fluttering out peacefully. The funeral will take place on Thursday at 2o'clock from the German Baptist Church.
The subject of this sketch has been connected with the history of the German Baptist Church since its inception in Canada, he being one of the founders, and the last surviving person of a little band of six who were baptized in the Smith Creek at New Hamburg in 1851. They were Mr. and Mrs. Hy. Schneider; Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Weaver and Mr. and Mrs. Fleischhauer. The members of this early church grew to sixteen and a church was organized with Mr. Schnieder brother of Mr. Fredk. Snyder, as pastor, and Mr. Fleischhauser as one of the deacons a position he occupied continuously till his death. He then lived at Bridgeport, but later on moved to Berlin, and was instrumental in the erection of the Church here. This is now the parsonage occupied by Rev, F. Friedrich, several of the original walls still standing.
During his fifty years active service in the church here the deceased gentlemen saw about 500 persons added to the Church membership.
He was engaged as the co pastuer in the early days of the Church, for the American Bible and Tract Society; by trade he was a tailor and he also engaged in the mercantile business, with marked success.
He attended all the Church Conferences until a few years ago and took a zealous interest in the work of the Church at large. At home he was always a ready helper to his pastors giving liberally of his time and means. He had the love and reverence of all the flock and his demise cause many a sorrying heart.
He was thrice married; his widow, but no children survive him.
