JONATHAN COOK
Friends and associates paid final tribute yesterday afternoon to Jonathan Cook, former governor of the county jail, at a public service from St. John's Anglican church, of which the deceased was a former warden. A private service was held earlier at his residence, 90 Hohner avenue. The obsequies were conducted by the rector, Rev. J. N. H. Mills.
The honorary pall bearers were Crown Attorney W. P. Clement, Ernest Tailby. Robert Puddicombe, New Hamburg. D. A. MacMillan, County Clerk Samuel Cassel and Leslie Bullock,
The bearers were Wray Sharpe, George Jacobs, Milton Browne, New Hamburg. John Bristan. Plattsville, and Marshall Bean, Detroit. Interment took place in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Retired Jail Governor Dies
Jonathan Cook Had Been in Declining Health for Past Year
Jonathan Cook, retired governor of the Waterloo county jail, died at his home, 90 Hohner avenue, today, following a lingering illness. Deceased was 90 years old.
Living in retirement for the last 12 years, after serving for 41 years as governor of the county jail, Mr. Cook had been in declining health for about a year. He did not leave his room on his 90th birthday last October and since that time he has been gradually growing weaker.
TAUGHT NEAR HAYSVILLE
Born near Plattsville on Oct. 2. 1850, he received his education at township schools and became a teacher in early manhood. He taught in the Haysville district for a few years and ended his teaching career to enter the hardware business in New Hamburg.
He was appointed governor of the county jail April 1, 1888, retiring in 1929. His record of service is believed to be the longest tenure of office in provincial jail annals.
During his career as a hardware merchant Mr. Cook headed a company of militia, recruiting the company to strength at the outbreak of the Riel Rebellion. The company was awaiting a call when the rebellion was suppressed by federal forces.
PROMINENT CRICKETER
Deceased was well known in Canadian athletic circles as a cricket player. He was one of the pioneers of the sport in the county and retired from the game 27 years ago as one of Canada's leading cricketers.
Mr. Cook was a member of the Liberal party and received his appointment to the governorship of the jail from the Mowat government 53 years ago.
Deceased was a member of Grand River Lodge A.F. and A.M. He was warden of St. John's Anglican. Church when the present church building was erected.
He was the son of James Cook and Elizabeth North, who came to this country settling at Washington, Ont.. nearly 100 years ago. He married Ellen Smith over 60 years ago. Miss Helen E. Cook, a daughter. who lived with him, survives. He was predeceased by his only son. Gordon, last December.
The funeral will be held Monday with a private service, at his late residence at 2.30p.m. and public service at St. John's Anglican church at three o'clock. Interment will take place in Mount Hope cemetery. The remains will be at the Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home until Sunday morning. when they will be taken to the residence.
