- Joan McQuillan McDaid
1933 \endash 2023
Joan McDaid, aged 89 years of Morningside Village, New Hamburg passed away peacefully on the 7th of February, 2023, at Parkwood Mennonite Home in Waterloo. Joan, affectionately known as "Joanie" at Parkwood, had been a resident there for just over three years and where she received loving and compassionate care from their wonderful staff.
Joan is predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Eddie, who passed in November of 2022, and her brother Bill Dickson, of Hamilton.
She is survived by son Brian and daughter-in-law Rae of St. Catharines, brother-in-law Jim McDaid (Janette D. 2015) of Glasgow, "Auntie" Josephine Robertson, niece Karen Cowan (Richard) and their children Aidan and Kian, nephew Mark (Diane) and son Lachlan, also of Glasgow. Karen had a special place in Joan's heart and was the daughter she never had. Joan is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, their spouses and children, all of Glasgow.
At the age of 7, during WWII, Joan was evacuated from Glasgow to the Irish Republic along with hundreds of other children to safeguard them from the frequent blitz attacks. She returned home to become an honour student at Whiteley's Business College and a drummer in a pipe band in her spare time. Joan and Eddie married in 1954.
In 1963 Joan and Eddie immigrated to Canada and built a prosperous new life for themselves and their son. Joan and Eddie worked hard and Joan managed the money. She was diligent and brilliant with the family purse. They travelled widely and built a future which allowed them to retire to Morningside Village in 1999.
We wish to express our sincere thanks to their friends and neighbours in Morningside, notably Shirley & Gary Collins and Sharon & Bob Dietrich, for their acceptance, care and support when Joan was in the onset stage of Alzheimer's disease.
Cremation has already taken place.
In the near future Joan and Eddie's ashes will be taken "home" to Glasgow for placement there.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to Parkwood Seniors Community of Waterloo, Ontario, would be most welcomed. Personal condolences can be posted at www.markjutzifuneralhomes.ca
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, New Hamburg
