    • LITTLE HUGH WILSON SINKS BEFORE HIS COM PANIONS EYES---A LONG SEARCH FOR THE BODY

On Tuesday afternoon, after school was out, Hugh J. Wilson, aged 11 years, a son of Mrs. Wilson, on the Stone Road and a pupil of the Separate School, accompanied by two other pupils, named Andrew and John Lannigan and a cousin from Palmerston, who is on a visit here, went up the river in the neighborhood of Mr. Melross’s residence (and near where the two Reid children were drowned about five years ago) for a bath. Wilson it seems was the first to get undressed and running into the water soon got beyond his depth, into a hole which is about 15 feet deep. He had told his companions that he was able to swim but this it seems was not the case, or he must have taken cramps for he had no sooner got into this deep hole, than he sank. His companions who were all young and could not render him any assistance, but cried very loudly for help to Neil Wilson and Fraser Hancock, who were bathing on the other side of the river. They at once came across in a row boat, but were too late to be of any service. Word was at once sent down to Henderson's boat house for help and men were busy all the evening and night, dragging the river in the vicinity of where the accident happened. It was well on to five o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, before the searchers were successful in bringing the body to land. Mr. Browngardner, one of the searchers while dragging in about the same spot where he sank, caught on to the body and succeeded in bringing it to the surface. It was at once removed to his grandfather's, Mr. John Johnstone's residence, on the Stone Road, from which place the funeral took place on Thursday afternoon, to the R. C. Cemetery.
